‘Just The Two of Us’

November 5, 2013

I absolutely love these photos by Klaus Pichler.

They depict a collection of ‘Cosplay’ enthusiasts, that is ‘Costume Play’. I suppose we all start out in life as children with the desire to dress up, but these guys take dressing up very seriously. Now, from a quick Google it seems that ‘Cosplay’ is the phenomenon, or rather the culture, of dressing up as a character and engaging in roleplay with others (I’m not talking sexual roleplay here don’t worry).

They lead a sort of double life where dressing up acts as the doorway out of drab reality and into the fantastical world of dress-up.

What the photographer does in ‘Just The Two of Us’ is juxtapose the worlds of fantasy and reality, and captures these enthusiasts as their character counterparts within a menial tableaux of domestic life. Their double lives have mixed into one.

And yet, even though on first glance it all looks a bit silly, there’s a normality that shines through – of people totally comfortable with themselves and their surroundings.
